Khao San Road Travel Guide

Khao Sarn Road, located in central Bangkok has been described as the centre of the backpacking universe. It is located only about 1 kilometre from the Grand Palace in the Phra Nakhon district of Bangkok. The street is quite small, running for about 3 blocks but is packed with a rare energy and a great mix of locals and international visitors.

Khaosan is literally “Milled Rice” and refers to the streets former role as a rice market. These days it is crammed with budget accommodation houses, bookshops, laundries, restaurants, bars, markets and more. Many small and cheap travel agents service the backpacker trade and can organise trips and visas to many south east asian countries. The bars are well known as backpacker hang-outs where stories and tips are exchanged over a drink.

It is home to the cheapest and most diverse range of foods in Bangkok – although perhaps not the most authentic in terms of local cuisine. The area hums with an upbeat feeling and is now also popular with locals, in particular the young and hip.
