Located just outside of Banff, the Banff Gondola climbs almost 700m (2,300 ft) to an altitude of 2,281m (7,486 ft) at the summit of Sulphur Mountain. The trip takes around 8 minutes as the modern four person gondola flies over the beutiful alpine forest below. Once at the top the views of the Rocky Mountains and Bow Valley below are breathtaking.
There is a fully appointed observation deck at the top where you can see the impressive Rocky Mountains marching away into the distance and if you’re looking to get out of the elements for a while there are two fully licensed restaurants serving delicious meals.
There is also a one mile interpretive walkway which explains the interesting history of the area and takes you through some beautiful forests. The walkway is quite steep and there are many stairs which may prove challenging to older visitors and young children, but the views from the top at the historic Sanson’s Peak Meteorological Station are well worth the effort.
On the way back doe the mountain be sure to check out the magnificent Banff Fairmont Springs Hotel in the valley below.
