Drive-Time & Fuel Cost Calculator
Enter the one-way distance, your average speed, your vehicle’s fuel efficiency, and the fuel price to see the drive time and fuel cost for your day trip, there and back.
Estimated drive
How the estimate works
Drive time comes from distance divided by average speed, and fuel cost comes from total distance divided by your vehicle’s miles-per-gallon rating, multiplied by the price per gallon. Because most day trips return the same day, the round-trip toggle is on by default and doubles the one-way distance for every figure below.
The biggest source of error is usually the average speed — a route that looks fast on a map can be much slower once you add stoplights, parking searches, and any traffic on the way out of town. Estimate on the cautious side if the timing of your day matters.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is drive time estimated?
Drive time is simply distance divided by average speed. Use a realistic average for the whole trip, not the speed limit on the fastest stretch — city streets, stoplights, and any traffic you expect will pull the average well below the highway limit.
Why does the calculator ask for fuel efficiency in mpg?
Fuel used is the total distance divided by your vehicle's miles-per-gallon rating, and fuel cost multiplies that by the price per gallon. Check your vehicle's manual or trip computer for a realistic mpg figure — official ratings tend to run a bit optimistic versus real-world mixed driving.
Does it account for a round trip automatically?
Yes, by default — most day trips return the same day, so the round-trip toggle is on and doubles the one-way distance for every downstream figure. Turn it off if you only need the one-way leg, for example if you're comparing a few possible destinations.
Does this include tolls or parking?
No — this tool only covers drive time and fuel. Add tolls and parking separately, or use the Ticket & Admission Budget Calculator to fold in parking alongside admission costs for the full day.
Educational tool only. Results are estimates based on the figures you enter; actual drive time and fuel cost vary with traffic, terrain, and driving style.
