Estimating your average speed honestly
Average speed is the input people guess worst, because it's tempting to enter something close to the speed limit rather than the speed you'll actually average once lights, turns, parking-lot crawling, and any slower local roads are included. A drive that's mostly highway might genuinely average in the 55-65mph range; a drive that mixes highway with city streets and a few miles of local roads at each end often averages far lower once you account for every stop and slow stretch, not just the open-road portions. Comparing two possible destinations

Run each destination's real distance through the calculator with the same speed, vehicle, and fuel price assumptions, and compare the two totals side by side — both the drive time and the fuel cost.
